Do Sheep Shed Their Fleece

Are their breeds of wool sheep that shed their wool? i'm not certain of all of the breeds crossed into my two ewes, but this spring they began to shed their wool. at first i was alarmed, but i then saw the new wool coming in underneath. it is definitely wool underneath and not hair. they itched and rubbed much the same way hair sheep do when. The more ancient species of sheep like the shetland, soay etc do shed their fleeces naturally and humans would just go around picking up the wool but once man started to selectively breed sheep for their fleeces they lost the ability to shed naturally and had to be shorn.. Though sheep breeders in the united states have been upbreeding the gotland sheep using some of these northern short tailed breeds as their foundation, i have not found any gotland breeders in the u. s. that have experienced their sheep shedding their wool..
